The 300 SE models were the best Mercedes could offer before the arrival of the 600 models (W100). The 300 SE had a fuel injection engine that was based on the engine of the famous 300SL Gullwing. All 300 SE's were fitted out with air spring suspension, power-assited steering and automatic transmission as standard. To distinguish them from the cheaper six cilinder models, Mercedes put extra chrome trimming round the wheelarches and along the body sills. The name '300SE' can be found on the chrome airvent. The Long Wheel Base 300 SE can be recognized by the lack of chrome on the C-pillar and, when looking carefully, by the 10 cm longer back doors.
